After a remarkable overnight experience during the Bicol Association of Catholic Schools Conference 2008, the more that I realized that life is like a broadsheet with a lot of stories to tell. The events that transpired all throughout the activity seemed to constitute the different sections of a newspaper.

I could say that I have been too much engrossed with press work that’s why I could create headlines, news stories, features, even lampoons (as a friend of mine suggests) out of my personal experiences during the BACS.

Actually, my intentions of actively participating in the activity waned a few weeks before the event. For some reasons, I preferred to do some other stuff and delegate some of my tasks to the board of editors. However, my thirst for experiencing the real essence of journalism led me to taking part in documenting a historical event for our university.

My decision did not disappoint me amid the unexpected circumstances that transpired during the big event. I had the chance to witness things first hand, talk to different kinds of people, hear their pleas, help them vent their plights, facilitate their expression of joy, and best of all, see the truth and grasp reality.

Yet the most fulfilling experience I would definitely treasure was when I had the chance to share a part of myself to the publication staff. I found joy in guiding the young correspondents through their first interviews. It really made me smile when they reported their experiences and I could see in them the passion and the fulfillment of being a campus journalist. I really laughed hard when my ever dearest associate editor shared with much exhilaration her experience of gaining access to every gate through her press ID. It was as if she discovered a power within.

Aside from giving instructions and teaching them how to get things done, I also mixed their coffee, prepared their dinner and made them comfortable during their rest period. I guess this had been my way of making them feel that I’m more of a friend or a big sister than a big boss or the person in authority. And I’m happy to see their pleased faces, hear their “thank you” and “I love you, ate”, and feel their warm hugs.

However, I also had my share of misfortunes during the event which concerned my loved ones outside the portals of the university. My best friend’s house helper met a tragic accident while fulfilling her duties. I had to leave the merriment for a while to be with my best friend who had been crying for hours. I wished to go to the hospital to yet the circumstances won’t allow me since it was almost 11 p.m. then. I went back to school with a heavy heart but with high hopes that Tyang would be fine soon.

I only had the chance to rest when the event was finally over. Since the office had already been occupied by the news team, the photojournalists, and the board of editors, I opted to sleep on the reception area with prayers that I would not see or feel any entity that had been living before.

The overnight coverage had really been a big heap of experience. Though I could not write everything that had happened in this blog entry, all the memories will surely be safely kept in my larger diary called HEART.
